“ÁLVARO LAPA: ALL OF TIME” TO VISIT IN SERRALVES UNTIL 13 MAY

'Álvaro Lapa: no tempo todo' para ver em Serralves até 13 de maio

'Álvaro Lapa: All of Time'

8 February to 13 May 2018

Serralves Museum, Porto

The exhibition “Álvaro Lapa: All of Time” will be the most comprehensive retrospective to date by this artist (Évora, 1939 - Porto, 2006). A writer and self-taught artist, his academic background focussed on Philosophy: it was as a professor of Aesthetics at Porto’s Faculty of Fine Arts that, from 1976 and for over two decades he left an indelible mark on several generations of artists.

The exhibition at the Serralves Museum, to be visited between 8 February and 13 May 2018, brings together works from important museum, institutional and private collections, including the collections owned by artists, architects and writers who also defined the artistic and intellectual landscape in Portugal in the second half of the 20th century. This exhibition brings together, for the first time, over 290 works from various periods in Álvaro Lapa’s career which include paintings, drawings and the rare objects he created, thus showing the artist’s remarkable contribution to contemporary art.

Álvaro Lapa remains among the most enigmatic figures in 20th century Portuguese art, with a body of work as relevant and visually alluring as it is elusive. Over the course of four decades, Lapa bridged the disparate traditions of Portuguese painting through a sustained exploration of the painting landscape as text.

Organised by the Serralves Foundation – Museum of Contemporary Art, and commissioned by guest curator Miguel von Hafe Pérez, this exhibition is supported by EDP Foundation. Álvaro Lapa is an artist with a very special connection to the EDP Foundation. Represented in EDP Foundation’s Art Collection, Lapa was awarded the EDP Foundation Art Grand Prize in 2004, which led to a large retrospective exhibition of his work, the last one which the painter helped to organise. More recently, in 2016, EDP Foundation held another exhibition at the Power Station building presenting some of his works which had never been previously shown.

A Founding Patron of Serralves, an institution with which it maintains, since 2001, a continuous relationship based on institutional and artistic cooperation, EDP Foundation annually sponsors an important exhibition form the programme at the Serralves Foundation Museum of Contemporary Art.
