US photographer John Stanmeyer, winner of the current edition, has captured an image portraying African migrants off the Djibouti coast trying to catch a mobile phone signal from neighbouring Somalia, where calls are cheaper. Bearing the title Signal, the photograph was taken on 26 February 2013 and published in National Geographic.
