On 12 July, MAAT will open an exhibition by renowned Chinese artist Bai Ming. White and Blue | Bai Ming – Lisbon will present over 200 pieces of pottery, drawing and painting which delineate a fascinating route where East and West meet. Bai Ming’s work will be exhibited both in the Turbine Hall, at the Power Station building – which will also be transformed for the first time into an exhibition space – and in the recently-opened EDP Foundation’s Campus Garden, between 12 July and 4 September. This exhibition is part of the programme Sino-Portuguese Cooperation and Cultural Exchange under the Initiative “One Track, One Route”.

Bai Ming is considered one of the artists who has contributed most actively to renewing and innovating Chinese artistic creation in pottery, ensuring that innovation continues tradition, bringing together oil and India ink, abstraction and decoration, pottery and sculpture, tradition and new languages.

The exhibition curators are Fan Di’an, president of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Rosa Goy and Margarida Almeida Chantre, from MAAT.

This is the first time that Portugal hosts an exhibition by Bai Ming. Pedro Gadanho, director of MAAT, emphasizes the relevance of this exhibition: “In one of the most iconic institutional spaces of the Power Station building, but also within the context of the recently-opened gardens of a campus in rapid renovation, we welcome this important work by an artist who brings up to date and expands the tradition of Chinese porcelain as one of the most powerful artistic expressions from a country with a millenary culture.”
