Adriana Proganó is the winner of the 14th edition of the EDP Foundation New Artists Award.

The prize was awarded unanimously by a judging panel chaired by Vera Pinto Pereira (president of Fundação EDP) and comprising Amanda Carneiro (curator), Luisa Cunha (artist), Marcio Doctors (art critic and curator), Ana Rito (artist, curator and researcher) and Miguel Coutinho (executive member of the board and general director of Fundação EDP).

According to the panel, "the work presented by the artist Adriana Proganó stood out for its boldness in producing something new within her own trajectory, in dialogue with the themes and languages to which she has been dedicated for some time". The panel also highlighted "the singularity of this proposal, which, combining irony and humour with institutional criticism, presents a renewed look at the practice of painting and its extension in the field of the object."

The judging panel also decided to award an Honourable Mention to Bruno Zhu for his unique artistic language, which incorporates fields of visuality such as design and fashion, making use of and depersonalising personal items.

The winner will be awarded a monetary prize of 20 thousand euros.

From among more than 700 applications, the finalists of the 14th edition of the EDP Foundation New Artists Prize included Adriana Proganó, Andreia Santana, Bruno Zhu, Maria Trabulo, René Tavares and Rita Ferreira.

The six artists are participating in a group exhibition that will remain open until 6 February 2023 at maat, curated by Luís Silva, Luísa Santos and Sara Antónia Matos.

The judging panel has noted the general quality of the entries of the six finalists, as well as the work developed by the curatorial team in the production of the exhibition. In line with previous editions of the EDP Foundation New Artists Prize, the panel believes this group of artists represents a good expression of the spirit of the current moment in art and the concerns of a generation.

Established in 2000, the EDP Foundation New Artists Prize is recognised as one of the most significant in the national art scene, having distinguished artists such as Joana Vasconcelos, Leonor Antunes, Vasco Araújo, Carlos Bunga, João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva, João Leonardo, André Romão, Gabriel Abrantes, Priscila Fernandes, Ana Santos, Mariana Silva, Claire de Santa Coloma and Diana Policarpo.
