What is the meaning of the emergence of animal protection, and even their liberation, as one of the great causes of these first decades of the 21st century? This theme is the main focus of the press file in issue 7 of ELECTRA magazine, where concepts such as humanism, anti-humanism, animalism, the environment, behaviourism, ethology, rights, conscience and guilt will be discussed. Several authors contribute to this reflection, among which are sociologist Alessandro Dal Lago, who follows the history of the indifference of philosophers towards the animal world; philosopher Boyan Manchev, who writes about ecopolitics and animal politics; and professor of neurology Massimo Filippi, who explores the divide between Human and Animal.

The partial destruction of Notre-Dame, resulting from the fire in April 2019, sets the tone for a discussion about the cult of heritage and the way it is used politically, from the perspectives of Salvatore Settis, archaeologist and historian, Carlo Pùlisci, art historian, and Pedro Levi Bismarck, architect and researcher. The three essays are accompanied by images of the Cathedral by photographer André Cepeda.

The eccentric Luisa Casati, the “futurist marchesa” – as the Italian poet Marinetti called her –, who predicted the artistic and cultural trends of the 20th and 21st centuries, is the figure whose story is told in this issue.

This issue’s portfolio is by Dutch artist Magali Reus, known for her work in the field of sculpture and presenting here her first incursion into photography. Reus offers us over ten photos of flowers and flower-delivery trucks, accompanied by an essay by American poet and curator Andrew Durbin, editor at Frieze Magazine.

Hisham Mayet, filmmaker, researcher and founder of the record label Sublime Frequencies, is interviewed by photographers and editors André Príncipe and José Pedro Cortes, who run through the narrative of a visual essay.
