Out of time, by Carolina Piteira, at Central Tejo | Fundação EDP

Out of Time is the title of Carolina Piteira’s exhibition, which will be held at Central Tejo, in Lisbon, between 12 and 31 January 2022. The exhibition contains 22 pieces and its theme revolves around Wind Energy, Solar Energy and Water Energy, and the way in which these different energies intersect with time.

The works created by the artist come as a response to EDP’s challenge to materialise the difficulties posed by climate change and the importance of society’s response to the climate emergency into works of art. Out of Time – an exhibition for Changing Tomorrow Now, by EDP – is part of the company’s recently-announced stance, which embodies the strategy of becoming a 100%-green energy company as early as the end of the current decade, by producing energy exclusively from renewable sources – wind, water and sun.

These are also the elements that guide Carolina Piteira’s most recent creation. For her works, she used several techniques and reclaimed materials. Among them is one of the kites belonging to Francisco Lufinha, the Portuguese navigator who has recently completed a solo journey from Portugal to the Caribbean Islands aboard a boat powered exclusively by renewable energies, thus successfully completing the EDP Atlantic Mission.

Climate change has always been a concern throughout Carolina Piteira’s life. However, her experience of being pregnant with her daughter Maria Teresa while working on these works meant that this concern acquired greater proportions. “We have run out of time to act, for ourselves, for our children and for future generations. Therefore, I hope that this exhibition will help to raise people’s awareness to the climate emergency and, if possible, to contribute towards a positive change in behaviour,” the artist explains.

Carolina Piteira began studying for her undergraduate degree in Painting in 2008, in Portugal, at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. As part of her course, she enrolled in the Erasmus Exchange Programme at the University of East London, where she obtained her degree with honours and received the Limehouse Arts Foundation Studio Award, having been singled out as the best student in her year.

In 2014, the Portuguese Ministry of Economy appointed her Ambassador of “Portugal Sou Eu”, to represent and support the Portuguese market as an emerging artist living abroad.

In May 2021, Carolina Piteira was the narrator for EDP’s new branding announcement, Changing Tomorrow Now, which embodied the company’s strategic ambition.

Since she completed her studies, Carolina Piteira has won several awards, including the Signature Art Award, which recognises emerging artists. She has exhibited in London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Madrid and Lisbon, with various group and solo shows, including an exhibition at the 2019 Venice Biennale.

In 2020, at the start of the pandemic, Carolina Piteira organised a charity art auction to provide the National Health Service with hospital equipment. The artist managed to raise eight thousand euros for Portuguese hospitals.
