Of Other Spaces is included in the series “Perspectives” – in which the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) offers themed approaches to the EDP Foundation Art Collection – and takes its title from an essay by Michel Foucault.
The exhibition explores the notions of space imagined and developed by several visual artists, which are often opposed to the definitions of space which stem both from scientific and technical disciplines.
In both its dimension and diversity – the two curators have selected over 70 works by 43 artists spanning several generations for this exhibition project – Of Other Spaces suggests a reflection around various topics stemming from the contrast between different ideas of space, such as matters of gender and identity, social alienation in contemporary urban contexts, or revisiting complex historical memories.
The exhibition, held on the ground floor of the Municipal Gallery in Porto, provides continuity to the partnership between the gallery and EDP Foundation. In 2017 and 2018, two other exhibitions were also organised through this partnership: Germinal. The Cabrita Reis Section in the EDP Foundation Art Collection and Quote/Unquote: Between Appropriation and Dialogue.
On the same day, 8 June, another exhibition will also be unveiled: Deserted. Something That’s Already Happen May Happen Again, by the artist Maria Trabulo, in collaboration with curator Pieternel Vermoortel and several other artists.
Entrance to both exhibitions is free, and they may be visited between 8 June and 18 August 2019, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm; and on Sundays from 2 pm to 4 pm.
