Mapping, Memory, Politics

10 July to 19 October 2014

EDP Foundation Gallery, Porto

The works by Luís Palma presented in this exhibition – photographs, light box photos and videos – make up an essay and a reflection on the individual and collective memory of society and the world.

Mapping, Memory, Politics approaches questions such as the relevance of the remembered object and the relationship between politics and landscape. The exhibition will be held between 10 July and 19 October 2014 at the EDP Foundation Gallery, in Porto.

As usual in the work of Luís Palma, the exhibition at the EDP Foundation Gallery, in Porto is a project with a clearly-defined territory: a mapping circumscribed to a memory. A political memory between past and present, on the border between the end of the Colonial War and the 25th April Revolution.

Luís Palma attended the Photography Higher Education Course at ESAP – Escola Superior Artística do Porto. He co-founded arts magazine Confidências para o Exílio and won work grants from several institutions, such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, La Beneficiéncia Cultural Centre, the Ministry for Culture and the Portuguese Photography Centre, among others.

With support from the Contemporary Art Programme from the Ilídio Pinho Foundation, he published the book Territorialidade, selected by PhotoEspaña as the Best Book of the Year, which was part of a collective exhibition held at the Spanish National Library, in Madrid. He also exhibited this project at Museu Coleção Berardo, in Lisbon, following his nomination for the 5th edition of BES Photo.

Over the course of two decades, Luís Palma has held regular exhibitions at several institutions, and some of his works are part of public and private collections.
