MAAT: a year marked by awards and nominations in 2017

 

MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology has earned several awards in 2017, five of which international, which have confirmed the new museum as an architectural and cultural project of excellence. It has also been nominated for five important competitions.

 

 

JANUARY

  • Novelty of the Year Award, voted by the readers of Time Out Lisbon.
     
  • The museum joins the list of the 40 finalist projects for the Mies van der Rohe award, out of a pool of 355 candidates. A bi-annual event, it’s one of the most important European architecture awards.

 

FEBRUARY

  • "Welcome To Portugal" Award, by LIDE Portugal, association of Corporate Leaders.

 

APRIL

  • MAAT wins the 2017 Design Prize, an award celebrating “excellence on a global scale”. It’s issued by magazines Designboom and Abitare, and sponsored by the city of Milan.

 

MAY

  • MAAT wins the 2017 Marketeer Art and Culture Awards.

 

JULY

  • The museum was selected as a finalist in the World Architecture Festival.

 

AUGUST

  • They are known as the “museum Oscars”, and MAAT won one of them: it was considered the Best Museum Architecture of the Year in the Leading Culture Destination Awards.
     
  • The German Design Council issued the 2017 Architecture ‘Best of Best’ Iconic Award to MAAT.

 

SEPTEMBER

  • MAAT receives an honourable mention in the Blueprint Awards for Architecture, in the category of Public Projects with Private Funding.
     
  • MAAT is issued an award for its innovative steel structure within the European Steel Design Awards, having qualified after having won the 2017 Portugal Steel Design Awards.

 

OCTOBER

  • MAAT is announced as a finalist in the 2018 Surface Design Awards, which recognise “progressive and innovative design” in indoor and outdoor spaces. These awards will take place at the Surface Design Show, in London, in February 2018.
     
  • MAAT gets “Recognition of Excellence” at the 2017 SIL Real Estate Awards.

 

NOVEMBER

  • The EDP Foundation won a gold medal at the latest edition of the Communication Efficiency Awards, for its activities involving the community at MAAT’s opening on 5 October 2016.

 

DECEMBER

  • MAAT is one of the 62 buildings chosen as candidates to the Riba International Prize, awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects to recognisethe most transformative building which demonstrates visionary, innovative thinking, excellence of execution, and makes a distinct contribution to its users and physical context”.
     
  • Honourable Mention - Valmor an Municipal Architecture Awards, one of the most prestigious portuguese awards for architectute.
