LOVING AS THE ROAD BEGINS

Ama como a estrada começa

This exhibition by João Pedro Vale & Nuno Alexandre Ferreira takes the title of a poem by Mário Cesariny, whose life and work inspired the theme for developing this project. In particular, their work evokes an episode which occurred in September 1964, when the poet was taken to a Parisian prison under the accusation of indecent exposure.

An original work designed specifically for the Project Room, Loving as the Road Begins presents itself as a reflection on spaces of body control and dissent. The artists exhibit a sculpture in which the visitor comes face to face with an amalgam of references evoking images of impurity and sanitation, disease and cure, crime and punishment, associating imprisonment facilities with lives condemned to be lived underground.

The exhibition alludes to characters and settings belonging to the queer imagery, as well as new forms of imprisonment and appropriation. Working together since 2004, João Pedro Vale & Nuno Alexandre Ferreira are the first artist duo who exhibit in this MAAT space. This exhibition was curated by Inês Grosso.
