Colour is the theme of Electra's dossier no. 31, which starts with fundamental questions — what is colour and how do we perceive it — to highlight its enigmatic and transversal nature. More than a property of objects, colour is presented as a perception produced by light and present in multiple dimensions of human experience, from art and architecture to design and politics. The “Subject” brings together contributions from various fields and authors, exploring historical and cultural tensions between chromophilia and chromophobia, exuberance and sobriety.
The edition includes an interview with Tamar Garb, curator and art historian, conducted by Afonso Dias Ramos, in which the author reflects on the places that have marked her career — from Cape Town to Paris and London — and on the need to rethink culture in Africa and Europe in a context of political instability. It also publishes unpublished works by Henri Michaux, presented by curator Tim Geissler, and a ‘Portfolio’ dedicated to a book by Sonia Gomes, with text by João Mourão and Luís Silva.
Among other highlights, Mario Pezzella pens an essay on Marilyn Monroe, on the centenary of her birth, exploring the figure between fame, emptiness and the symbolic construction of the icon. There is also an interview with architect Neil Leach on architecture in the age of artificial intelligence and the future of cities, as well as texts and reflections by Kaya Genç (on Erich Auerbach and Mimesis), Jorge Martins (based on a quote by Picasso), Jeremy Fernando (on Singapore) and Damiano Palano (on “Polarisation”).
